This Woman’s Pedicure Horror Story Will Make You Rethink Ever Getting One Again

When it comes to treating ourselves, us girls love the days when we go for a mani-pedi. There’s nothing like having someone rub your feet for a few minutes. Plus, unpolished nails kind of freak me out (on myself, at least). When we do go to nail salons, we expect them to be clean and hygienic, so that we don’t get any infections or problems–I mean, these people are cutting our nails and toe-nails, and we can easily develop rashes, infections, and problems if the tools are not fresh and cleaned properly. One Facebook user shared some terrifying pictures of when she recently got a pedicure at a nail salon that landed her in the hospital.

A little over a week ago the girls and I had a great day getting nails done and I got a pedicure at the new Nails and Lounge in Noblesville. Welllll said pedicure landed me in an unplanned vacation at the hospital beginning on Tuesday and still here. I have never in my life experienced such pain in my life. Here are some pictures of what it has been like for me. I currently am on the strongest antibiotics available given by IV and still having a hard time getting it under control. So ladies and Gents remember this the next time you want to get a pedicure!!! Continued prayers and positive thoughts greatly appreciated!!!! And thank you to all of you that have checked in on me….you have no idea how much it means to me

Clearly, this infection got worse over time. Many people were curious as to how she developed this infection and questioned the tools used at the salon. Jennifer posted an update to the post saying that the stones and scrapers used at the salon (and many others) are not sanitized and therefore can spread other people’s germs to you.

First and foremost I want to thank everyone for the awesome support and prayers, so much appreciated! I have noticed a lot of you have asked how did this happen when tools are in sanitized packets. Well the pumice stones and the scrapers (which are prohibited in all nail salons but they use them anyway) are not sanitized….AT ALL. Therefore someone else’s germs are always on them. When they use the pumice stones or scrapers it causes tiny breaks in the skin where infection can set in. Also the bowls your feet soak in must be properly sanitized if covers are not used. The place I went to was pretty new and absolutely gorgeous place and I loved it there. Not anymore 🤢 ~hopefully this answers more questions!!! Again THANK YOU ALL for continued prayers and positive juju and will update with pictures post surgery when they unwrap it!!!

Jennifer ended up needing to have surgery in the end. Who knew a relaxing pedicure could turn out so terrible?

It just goes to show you that whenever you try to treat yo’self, you should make sure everything is clean and sanitized. You never know what kind of bacteria can be on unsanitized tools and props–always double check.

The real cost of a manicure

“Nails done, hair done, everything did.” These are lyrics to the popular Drake song “Fancy.

The beauty industry is a booming business and a common appeal — even musicians talk about it in their songs.

In 2017, the nail salon industry generated about $8.53 billion in the United States. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2017, the average pay for manicurists was $24,980, which is about $12.01 per hour. The average cost of a manicure is $20.

The nail industry is expected to grow and employ more people. However, the health of manicurists and other nail technicians is at stake. Manicurists are exposed to heavy fumes from the chemicals used in the salons for long periods of time. Many of these chemicals are known to cause cancer, birth defects, miscarriages and other harmful reproductive health issues.

Skin disorders are very common among nail salon workers. The chemicals in the products are classified as skin sensitizers, which can contribute to painful reactions.

Research is limited among nail salon workers. Little is known about the extent to which they are exposed to harmful chemicals, the accumulated effect over time and the relation of this exposure to their health. The two most important laws pertaining to the safety of cosmetics sold in the United States are the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act and the Fair Packaging and Labeling Act. These laws are outdated and do not require producers to share safety information with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. These laws ban ingredients that may be harmful to users, but they do not contain provisions to test the effects of the chemicals before putting them on the shelves.

In California, complaints from nail salon workers were popping up at Asian Health Services, which is based in Oakland. The California Healthy Nail Salon Collaborative was created to improve the health, safety and rights of nail and beauty care workers. It has also advocated for the ban of hazardous chemicals used in nail salons.

Many customers often complain about the lack of hygiene in nail salons; however, many nail salon workers bear exposure to skin diseases and fungal infections from their daily interactions with customers’ hands and feet.

Dibutyl phthalate, or DBP, toluene and formaldehyde are the top three chemicals associated with most serious health issues. They are commonly known as the “toxic trio.” DBP is the ingredient that makes nail polishes pliable and was listed as a possible contributor to impaired fertility. The European Union has banned this chemical and 1,300 other hazardous chemicals; however, the United States has banned fewer than a dozen hazardous chemicals in such products, and there are no restrictions on DBP. Toluene is a solvent that helps nail polishes glide on smoothly. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, this chemical can impair cognitive and kidney functions. Formaldehyde is a hardening ingredient in nail products. In 2011, the Department of Health and Human Services labeled it as a carcinogen.

Exposure to these known hazardous chemicals will have adverse health effects on nail salon workers. More research will need to be done to learn more about the long-term effects of exposure to such chemicals. Many coalitions such as the California Healthy Nail Salon Collaborative are making strides in advocating for stronger oversight and restrictions on harmful chemicals in cosmetic products. Results of these efforts include fewer harmful chemicals and better alternatives.

The Healthy Nail Salon Program is a grassroots program that encourages nail salon owners to use “green” nail products in their shops. Additionally, shops must provide adequate ventilation, perhaps by opening windows and doors. Currently, there are about 55 out of a few thousand salons in California involved in this program.

Pushing for better nail product alternatives and changing policy regarding current hazardous chemicals used in nail products are just the steps needed to provide better health outcomes and improve overall well-being for all nail salon workers. We as consumers can be more aware of the types of nail products we buy for personal use as well as be more proactive in seeking out nail salons with fewer harmful chemicals. Some nail polish brands with nontoxic chemicals are: Zoya, Suncoat, Honeybee Gardens, Sheswai and LVX. Also, limiting the times we go to the nail salon will help reduce our exposure to these chemicals. So, instead of every two weeks for a fill or color change, maybe go every three weeks or every month.

Looking “fancy” comes with a cost. That cost is the health of the nail salon workers.

The internet is losing it over this guy feeding his GF chicken nuggets while she gets a manicure

If you’re reading this story thinking it’s too good to be true, then prepare for a delightful plot twist. It all began when 19-year-old Lea Adame witnessed an endearing encounter at a local nail salon and felt compelled to share the incident on Twitter.

You see, the manicurist next to Adame was meeting her son’s girlfriend for the first time, according to the sleuths over at Buzzfeed News. While the manicurist chatted with the girlfriend and gave her what we expect to be a fabulous mani, the son-slash-boyfriend rose above and beyond and hand-fed his girlfriend chicken nuggets mid-manicure.

— lea adame (@leaadame) August 25, 2017

Now that’s some selfless love, folks.

“It was so cute…he was a keeper,”Adame told Buzzfeed News. “What guy will go to a nail salon with a girl, let alone will feed her food while there?”

To answer your questions, Lea: We don’t know, but we ~need~ a partner just like him.

a guy at the salon is straight up feeding his girl chicken nuggets while she gets her nails done that’s the kind of love & support i need

— lea adame (@leaadame) August 25, 2017

In keeping with the old adage—pics or it didn’t happen—Adame snapped a photo of the incident for Twitter. And Twitter reacted accordingly:

— Eli Dejan (@atherice) August 28, 2017

— Mochagirl73 (@ghanyathomas) August 27, 2017

— ruby (@neonbibIe) August 27, 2017

It even seems that said girlfriend in the photo reached out to Adame to thank her for sharing the nugget-feeding photo:

GIRL…I saw your tweet a few days ago and thought “oh haha, my bf did this for me the other day. how funny” BUT IT WAS REALLY US THANK YOU

— Yipnotiq (@yipnotiq) August 31, 2017

We are so thankful and blessed that you captured this candid moment for us. Thank you.

It’d be cliche to call this one out as #relationshipgoals, so we’ll go with what Twitter user  @DBUNugNugz said: #TrueLoveGivesYouNugz.

Gold Leaf Manicure Tutorial (Plus 20 More Insanely Easy Nail Art Tutorials)

It’s always a party when I paint my nails with a little gold sparkle. I’ve seen the glitter, the gold polish, the gold paint, but hadn’t happened upon gold leaf yet and thought, “Well, why not?!” It involves just one extra step when painting your nails, and the results are perfectly gilded! ou can get gold leaf at any craft store, or you can buy 20 sheets of gold leaf on Amazon here for $11.

This gold leaf manicure tutorial is practically fail-proof. And if you’re looking for more simple yet gorgeous nail art tutorials, check out the slideshow. These tutorials are so easy that you can even do them with your kids.

DIY Gold Leaf Manicure

Supplies:

DIY Gold Leaf Manicure

  • nail polish in color of choice (The gold leaf looks great against pinks, purples, and red!)
  • top coat
  • tweezers

Instructions:

Pre-Manicure: Before starting your manicure, be sure to prep your nails by cleaning them, trimming the nail beds, and filing any snags or rough edges. Put a small amount of lotion on your hands before getting started!

DIY Gold Leaf Manicure

Step 1: Paint your nails in your color of choice. Take your time and move slow around the edges. Paint all the way to the edge of the nail beds to ensure maximum coverage!

DIY Gold Leaf Manicure

Step 2:Use the tweezers to attach a few small pieces of the gold leaf to your nails. Work a few nails at a time and be sure to do this after thirty seconds or so. You don’t want the polish to be completely dry. It needs to be tacky so that the gold leaf has something to grab onto.

DIY Gold Leaf Manicure

Step 3:Use your finger to gently pat down the gold leaf. Just smooth it over by rubbing your finger over it. This will also help the flakes move around and take on unique shapes and designs.

Step 4: Allow your nails to dry for two minutes or longer and then apply a top coat. The gold leaf won’t move around if it’s attached properly to the color. If you catch a little snag, just go with it! It will dry in the top coat layer.

Et voila! You’ve got a manicure fit for a queen and perfect for those holiday parties you know you’ll be attending!

It’s Sandal Season and You Haven’t Had a Pedicure—Here’s How to Fake It

’Tis the season of sandals—and there is nothing like a fresh pedicure. Toes, no matter how knobby or crooked, are suddenly elevated: cuticles are nonexistent, misshapen nails fade into the ether, and, of course, there’s always a double layer of look-at-me red lacquer. But for those who find themselves facing the first truly warm day of summer with a less-than-stellar pedicure and who still want to let their toes wriggle free? There is a way to rehab that hungover, chipped nail polish—on every other toe—and liberate your shrouded feet from their socks in 20 minutes or less.

The first decision to be made: Are you willing to go without polish? As in, stripping down those phalanges and letting them be their naked selves. It’s a contentious subject. After all, a glossy pedicure is the epitome of self-care—but a full polish detox does have its benefits. “Years of never not wearing red on my toes wrecked my nails, so much so that I imposed a polish ban this past winter while my feet were securely tucked away from public viewing,” says Vogue Beauty Writer Zoe Ruffner, who has since turned the temporary polish ban into a long-term habit. Ruffner has a point: A no-frills, very cool Kate Moss has long stepped out with little or no polish as a chic alternative to a high-maintenance hue.

If you are comfortable with baring all, the trick to going “bald digit” is to meticulously care for your now fully exposed nails themselves. According to nail artist Madeline Poole—who notes that her own “toes have been through the ringer” this past winter—zeroing in on discoloration is key. “Most people I know have similar situations where their nails are yellowing and flaking just from wearing nail polish forever,” she says. After removing any lingering lacquer, “you can get a buffer and gently buff that down.” Another way to remedy unsightly nail stains? Poole recommends whipping up a homemade recipe similar to a tooth-whitening mix. “You can do baking soda and lemon juice and toothpaste,” she says. “It is like a little concoction of that stuff, and you can kind of physically toothbrush your toes.”

If skipping polish is simply an impossibility, Poole notes that wearers can cheat a bit with a layer of clear or slightly tinted polish. “Jin Soon has a sheer white that is almost clear but it has a little color called Dew,” says Poole. Ruffner agrees, adding that when she does paint her toes these days, she opts for Essie’s Spin the Bottle. The semi-sheer color is so light, she says, “when it chips you can hardly tell.” Best of all? “It goes with any and every summer sandal.”
